THE UNDERSTANDINGS BEHIND
BYL RESOURCE

No one series or collection can provide all of the challenge
or support any group of students needs at any one time.
However, teachers who know what the available books offer,
know their students, and know the key elements of literacy
can mix and match and adapt and amend to provide a
comprehensive collection of material to nurture emerging
readers and writers to become competent, fluent, and
passionate creators and re-creators of the printed and
spoken word. The suggestions and outlines in this resource
are based on the following understandings:

Reading and writing are modes within literacy and are
interdependent between themselves and within the
other modes of listening and speaking.

Reading is comprehending. Comprehension is inherent
in the act of reading—not a follow-up activity. To
comprehend a text means to access and interpret
meaning for oneself as one decodes the words and
    the text  structure.

Writing is recording one’s comprehension of experiences,
ideas, information, or desires. Through writing, one
comes to a deeper level of comprehending what is
    known, thought, or felt.
