FEATURES OF BOOKS FOR YOUNG
LEARNERS COLLECTION

The Books for Young Learners Collection has been
developed to be flexible and useable by students with
a wide range of abilities to read and write in English
while retaining its high appeal for primary learners.

Levels and Approaches

A leveling bar on the back of each English title offers
possible approaches appropriate for different stages
of reading development. These are
suggested entry
points for the teacher’s consideration only. It is the
teacher’s responsibility and privilege to decide
whether a book is suitable for a particular group or
student and to determine the instructional approach.
This leveling system emphasizes the flexibility of the
collection. Teachers do not use the books in any
specific order, and students do not need to experience
all three approaches with all titles. Because teachers
can use this leveling system on books from other
publishers, it is a tool for organizing classroom or
school-wide collections of reading instructional materials.
