Description:

The Proficient Reader Record
(PRR) is a tool for assessing third and fourth graders’  knowledge and control over of both the reading process and specific genres. PRR: Theory and Use of Genre Assessment gives an overview of the research behind the PRR and the procedure the teacher follows to take a one-on-one assessment with each student. The PRR provides forms for the teacher to record and track both individual and class results and progress. Each text form is represented by two different pieces, so teachers can also track progress in a pre- and post-test fashion.

The procedure is: 1) The teacher determines what genre will be assessed, selects one of the provided reading passages in that genre, and makes copies of the appropriate forms; 2) in a one-on-one setting, the student reads a short piece reprinted from an actual age-appropriate publication aloud while the teacher records the reading; 3) the student either finishes the selection silently or re-reads entire piece silently; 4) the teacher asks the student carefully worded questions to determine what he or she understands and uses about the reading process and the genre with its particular features ; 5) away from the student, the teacher evaluates the student.

Currently three assessment modules are available (Genre Assessments for Fables, Fairy Tales, and Fantasies; Genre Assessments for Informational, Biographical, and Procedural Texts; and Genre Assessments for Poetry and Plays. Each module includes one resource book for the teacher containing detailed information about the genre and photocopiable forms and one full-color reading passages book for the student to read from
