The Poetry Friday Anthology For Middle School:
the School Year with Connections
to the Common Core
by Sylvia Vardell
Common Core, 6-8 Teacher's Edition Middle School
Adopt a new approach to language arts:
each Friday, take 5 minutes to share The Poetry Friday Anthology.
Sylvia Vardell and Janet Wong have collaborated to create The Poetry
Friday Anthology series. Now you can meet the Common Core State
Standards (CCSS) in the English Language Arts (ELA) with Easy “Take
5” Poetry Lessons. “Take 5” teaching tips for each poem provide
step-by-step poetry lessons that address curriculum requirements.
Just five minutes every “Poetry Friday” will reinforce
key skills in reading and language arts such as rhyme, repetition,
rhythm, and alliteration. The Poetry Friday Anthology for Science
will jump-start science discussions, too!
Poems in the two books include
examples of many techniques, forms, and elements—rhyme, repetition,
and rhythm; metaphor and simile;
personification; onomatopoeia; hyperbole; dramatic irony; and
different forms (haiku, acrostic, ghazal, sonnet, reverso, analogies
