The Foundations of
Early Literacy
A two-day seminar
for teachers of emergent
readers and writers

|
“David
Matteson has provided our school district with the foundation,
leadership, and research to enable us to move forward in our early
childhood endeavors. His books and in-service sessions provided the
missing link in professional development for our teachers and
administrators and put into place a foundation for our schools in
reading and writing. Vertical alignment now exists from
the
pre-K classroom to the fifth grade classroom. David is synonymous
with teaching, learning, and literacy.”

About the
Seminar
Now your district can help pre-K
and primary teachers
use a uniquely effective approach to developing early
literacy, based on the publications Assessing and
Teaching Beginning Readers and Assessing and Teaching
Beginning Writers.
Led by co-author David Matteson, The Foundations of
Early Literacy Seminar expands on the information provided
in the books and explains how teachers can engage students in
using or drawing pictures and then talking or writing about those
pictures, in order to help young students learn:
• Concepts about print, such as reading top-to-bottom
and left-to-right, differentiating
pictures and print,
linking oral and written language,
etc.
• Narrative structures, such as beginnings and endings,
characters, settings, dialogue, etc.
• Words and their components, including phonemic
awareness, phonics, vocabulary, the
alphabet, etc.
Focusing on writing during the first day and reading during the
second day, this seminar uses the Teaching and Learning Cycle
and the continuums found in the author’s books to provide a
comprehensive framework for assessing young students,
evaluating their work, and planning effective instruction.
