The Teaching and Learning Cycle offers a structure to guide the teacher in
making professional decisions about
what a learner next needs to know,
what
needs to be taught, what resources to use, what form of grouping
will work best, and what approach to use in supporting learners.

This construct evolved in the 1990s as educators working with The Learning
Network searched for a way to describe a model to help teachers plan good
instruction that would help a learner at any stage to make progress. Click Here
for more information and to view a schema of the cycle.

This conversation will investigate the elements of the teaching and learning
cycle and will introduce examples from educators who work with young children,
with secondary students, and in professional development environments.

We invite all classroom teachers, administrators, and staff developers to be
part of the conversation.

  • Participate in a learning discussion with educators involved in theory,
research, and practice that supports differentiated instruction and responds
to the needs of individual learners.
  • discuss the meaning of assessment for learning; consider how formative
    assessment shapes instruction.
  • investigate how to evaluate assesssment samples to make instructional
decisions about what the learner next needs to learn.
  • explore the layers and components of planning for instruction--identifying
a learning objective, grouping for effective instruction, choice of resource,
    and selection of approach.
  • consider how these decisions lead to instruction that can take a learner
to a new level of understanding.
