RELEASE -- May 7, 1998

Montview Elementary School in Aurora, Colorado, a school supported by
The Learning Network, has been recognized by the U.S. Department of
Education as one of seven winners of the Second Annual National Award
for Model Professional Development. Eighty-three applicants were screened
through a rigorous evaluation process that consists of two rounds of application
reviews, telephone interviews, and a two day site visit. Montview Elementary
successfully demonstrated evidence of its students' success, the quality of its
professional development program, and the usefulness of that program to others
while meeting the ten Principles of High-Quality Professional Development, as
established by the Department of Education's Professional Development Team.

The National Award for Model Professional Development was established in
1996 to disseminate "information about high-quality professional development
efforts that provide evidence of student learning and increased teacher effectiveness"
and recognize "schools and school districts with exemplary professional development
programs."

Since Montview began receiving support from The Learning Network, the school
has received other commendations, including the 1996 International Reading
Association Exemplary Reading Program Award.

The award will be presented by Secretary of Education Richard Riley in an open
ceremony on May 18, 1998 at 1:00 p.m. at Anderson House, 2118 Massachusetts
Avenue, Washington, D.C.

The most dynamic design for
school development available today

The Learning Network is a successful long-term, site-based plan to support
schoolwide change. Based on theory and supported by research: The Learning Network
uses literacy as a vehicle for gaining deeper understandings about the nature of teaching
and learning that is reflected in instruction. TLN is designed to redefine good classroom
practice, establish a common language for all members of the learning community, and
build consistency across grade levels and throughout the curriculum.

Students thrive in an environment that is consistent from classroom to classroom and
grade level to grade level. They become confident, accomplished readers and writers,
and enthusiastic, independent life-long learners.

Teachers develop a deep understanding of the theory that shapes effective instruction.
They become more productive and skillful decision makers.

Administrators become more active and involved instructional leaders. They ensure
responsibility and accountability for achieving educational success.

Schools become learning organizations that continue to develop. They are an ever richer
environment for all members of the community.
